How to Cope When Your Parents Argue

When your parents argue, it can feel loud, scary, or upsetting. You might feel stuck in the middle. It is important to know this: their arguments are not your fault and not your job to fix.

What You Can Do

Find a calm space
If voices start getting raised, it is okay to step away. Go to your room, put headphones on, or sit somewhere you feel safe.

Talk about how you feel
When things are calm, you can say something like:
‘I feel upset when there is shouting.’
You are allowed to share your feelings.

Do not take sides
You do not have to choose between your parents. You can love both of them without getting involved.

Speak to someone you trust
This could be a teacher, family member, school staff member, or a friend’s parent. You do not have to handle it on your own.

Use calming tools
Try simple things to help your body relax:

  • Take slow, deep breaths
  • Listen to music
  • Draw or write
  • Watch something that makes you smile

Stick to your routine
School, hobbies, and seeing friends can help you feel more normal and settled.

A Helpful Reminder

Even if it feels like it, you are not responsible for fixing things between your parents. Grown-ups are in charge of their own problems.

You Are Not Alone

Lots of children go through this, and there are always people who want to help you feel safe and supported.

If things ever feel too overwhelming, telling a trusted adult is a really strong and important step.
